September 28, 2026A Message of Support, Safety, and Solidarity
On the evening of September 20, a now-identified suspect with a shotgun opened fire outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville while members of the Jewish community gathered to observe Yom Kippur.
We are disturbed by this act of gun violence in a community so close to Kingston and recognize the confusion and fear that many students are feeling. This shooting may be especially distressing for Jewish students, staff, and faculty, and our community of students for whom Belleville is home. We also recognize the impact that violence in one community has on another, and that students may be worried about safety on campus and at their places of worship in Kingston.
As graduate and professional students, we dedicate our work to the advancement of knowledge, the creation of a better future for all, and upholding the highest ethical standards. In embracing these values in our community, the SGPS condemns violence towards places of worship, in Canada and globally, and remains committed to fostering a campus environment where all students can practice their faith freely.
